What happens when someone scans it
Recent iPhones and Android phones read Wi-Fi codes with the built-in camera or Google Lens and offer to join the network, so guests never type the password. The phone only joins after the guest confirms.
Special characters and hidden networks
Backslashes, semicolons, commas, colons and quotes in the name or password are escaped automatically, so they reach the phone intact. Tick hidden network if your router does not broadcast its name. Open networks use no password.
When the password changes
The password is stored inside the image, so a new password needs a new code. Print the code where you can replace it easily, such as a table card or a framed sign.
Printing it
A common rule of thumb is a code at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide for close scanning, and larger the further away people stand. Keep dark modules on a light background, leave a quiet margin around the code, and test the printed proof with more than one phone.
Where to put a WiFi QR code.
Put the code where guests first ask for the password: on café and restaurant tables, at a hotel or office reception, inside a holiday rental's welcome folder, or on a sign at an event entrance.
Place it at eye or table level, away from glare, and print the network name and password next to it for anyone whose phone cannot scan. A laminated card or a small frame keeps it readable for longer.
Is a WiFi QR code safe?
The code contains your network name and password as plain text, so anyone who can see the code can join, exactly as if the password were printed. Use it for a guest network rather than the network your own devices and files are on.
When the password changes, the old code stops working. Replace printed copies at the same time, and use the guest network feature of your router if you want to change the password without disturbing your own devices.
